Zabalaza
This project was in response to a D&AD brief about music as a form of protest. We looked at bubblegum music which is a genre that arose during the South African apartheid. Some bubblegum songs would hide revolutionary lyrics within a pop song so that they could be played on government radio stations.
The visuals for the album cover were inspired by the trojan horsing of revolutionary messages in a pop form. We developed a visual language that was inspired by fruit stickers and bubblegum packaging. We then used these stickers to insert protest slogans of the time onto the album cover.

We then looked at how the this visual language we developed could be extended to protest movements of today. So we designed stickers for climate justice and the Mouvement des gilets jaunes.
